Help for Sleep Problems and Insomnia

Many of us have ‘a bad night’ from time to time. What defines a sleep problem?

It’s difficult to define ‘normal sleep’ as age, lifestyle, environment and diet play a key part in influencing the amount of sleep we get, however here are some of the most common symptoms of a sleep problem and the key word to add is recurring:

  • Trouble falling asleep
  • Wakefulness during the night
  • Wakefulness very early in the morning
  • Irritable moods and low energy levels
  • Reduced concentration and focus
  • Chronic fatigue

How can counselling help me with a sleep problem?

At Fresh Mind Therapy, our therapists have extensive training and experience in treating sleeping problems and can help you begin your journey towards a more restful life. Counselling and psychotherapy, particularly Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), are highly effective in the treatment of sleep problems. CBT sessions will help you to:

  • Identify and explore the underlying causes of your sleep problems
  • Re-evaluate unhelpful or distorted thought cycles
  • Reduce unhelpful behaviours surrounding sleep e.g. checking the clock constantly
  • Improve sleeping habits e.g. switching off technology such as phones in the bedroom
  • Develop skills and practises to reduce mental and physical arousal e.g. lying in bed worrying
  • Promote relaxation
