What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a branch of psychotherapy and the approach we use most often here at Fresh Mind Therapy. Based on well-established research and scientific results, the core idea of CBT is that a person’s behaviour patterns and emotional reactions are strongly influenced by the thoughts they have about that situation. In other words, how we interpret an event affects how we feel and act. If we can identify and challenge these initial thoughts, we can therefore overcome unhealthy thinking and destructive behaviours.
The aim of CBT therefore is not to pathologise but to help you develop skills to optimise your personal, social and occupational functioning.
What is Psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy is an umbrella term used to describe any process during which a trained psychotherapist helps a person tackle a mental problem or illness through discussion. A psychotherapy session will therefore involve talking about and exploring your feelings, past memories and experiences. For this effect, we provide a safe, non-judgemental environment and may use a range of therapeutic techniques, such as CBT (see above)
What is Counselling?
Similar to psychotherapy, counselling also describes talking therapy which allows a person to discuss their problems and feelings in a confidential and dependable environment. Our counsellors and psychotherapists are trained to listen with empathy and can help you deal with any negative thoughts and feelings you have.
What happens in a Fresh Mind therapy session?
At Fresh Mind Therapy our psychotherapy sessions provide a safe and neutral environment, away from your everyday life, in which to discuss, examine and overcome your problems. Sessions generally take place at the same time and place each week and will last 50 minutes. Psychotherapy can employ a wide range of techniques, both discursive and practical. Your therapist will only use those deemed most appropriate for you and your problem.
How many sessions will I need and how long is each session?
The number of sessions always depends on the client and the presenting issues however Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – the set of techniques used most at Fresh Mind Therapy, tends to have rapid results. A full time-scale can be discussed and agreed with your therapist in the initial consultation. Each session lasts 50 minutes.
How often should I have a session?
It is recommended that you have your planned sessions once a week. This is to create a positive routine of self-care, helping you to stay connected to your progress and address issues as they occur in your daily life.
How will I know if therapy is right for me?
In your initial consultation, your therapist will help you identify your problems clearly and the effect they are having on your daily functioning. From there, your therapist will propose a treatment or recovery plan, outlining what it entails and how it can benefit you. You can then choose whether to continue with treatment at this time.
